Introduction

Cc Foundation & Art Centre is pleased to present artist Jiayu Liu’s solo exhibition “Waves of Code” on March 17th, 2023, featuring the artist's latest practice.

The exhibition is entitled Waves of Code, which was generated after the discussion between the artist and ChatGPT. Through the research and practice of light and shadow media in the past ten years, the artist found that in the process of human civilization development, the world has developed into a world where experience is formed, achieved through and mediated by technology. The electronic display screen and projector lens have been regarded as the natural body feeling interface and the main carrier medium for viewing and reading information. It is related to the danger that the individual senses are hijacked by the industrial system, and the possibility that human desire and unconscious existence are eliminated, as suggested by Bernard Stiegler from the perspective of embryology. At the same time, it continues Benjamin's criticism of the disappearance of "aura" in the era of mechanical reproduction. Jiayu’s artistic creation attempts to break up this situation and creatively reshape it. In this show, she focuses on exploring and excavating the reflexivity of media, and deepens the multiple understanding and expansion of the media she uses from a new perspective.

Regarding the creative concept, the artist will continue the data combination of the natural physics vision and real -time rendering in the past, and then study the "light and shadow" to continue the essential relationship between the two. However, regarding the carrying media, she chose to use only light -emitting diode and organic glass, peeling away all other materials, and using a three-dimensional information diagram language as a narrative clue. Compared with the source image presented by programming solution in the device itself, this practice focuses on the perceived liquidity in the natural field created by the industrial light itself, and explores the essence of aesthetics from the science of perceptual sense.

As the curator Irini Papadimitriou said, Waves of Code is a space where one can feel energy of the universe through light and shadow. The installation is a portal between a real and virtual space inviting us to engage in a dialogue with a universal landscape we are all familiar with but often bypass. A space where the artist reminds us again about the immensity and wonder of our world prompting us to reflect on and rethink our position within it.
