Introduction

“I Will Die”, one of the iconic pieces by Yang Zhenzhong. With a camera in hand he managed to capture the facial expressions of the instants when people of different races, ages and identities said it out loud that “I Will Die”. 
 

The project was initiated 16 years ago and during the process, the artist has travelled around a dozen of countries and collected over 500 video clips by people of different ages, identities and cultures saying “I Will Die” to the camera in 11 different languages.In front of the camera, everyone was treated equally under the theme of “I Will Die”. What the camera recorded, in a sense, was the evidence of being alive, a confrontation of death.
 

Being one of the leading contemporary video artists in China, Yang Zhenzhong’s exploration through video and photography dated back to 1995. Due to the direct confrontation and probe into a variety of social, artistic and philosophical issues, his work has attracted wide attention. With a focal point on the disharmonies embedded in the Chinese society, the conflicts incurred accordingly, as well as the investigation into issues such as life and death, the evolving social modes, Yang’s practice is brimming with vision and courage to challenge so-called established social behavior and values.
