Born in 1977 in Fujian, Pak Sheung Chuen immigrated to Hong Kong in 1984 and graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2002, he currently lives and works in Hong Kong. Pak Sheung Chuen’s practice might be described as immaterial, everyday, process-based, and collaborative. He draws from his daily life experiences in and around Hong Kong to create playful, yet thoughtful, works that upturn ordinary everyday experiences into unexpected surprises and encounters. Although never visually spectacular, Pak’s projects reconfigure a personal system that involves bodily actions and effectively challenges the existing social logic and commodity-based culture. His art is almost invisible, almost impossible to document, but manages to explore the human condition in all its complexities and with loving precision.
From the years 2003 to 2008 Pak served as an art columnist for the newspaper Ming Pao, and from 2015, he re-opened the column again, where he published a conceptual work every week. Each of these works—which can be described as performances, experiments, actions, or instructions—were intended to inject a spirit of the unknown into the space of everyday life.
Pak has participated in Liverpool Biennial 12, Taipei Biennial 10, 3rd Yokohama Triennial, 3rd Guangzhou Triennial, China Power StationII and 6th Busan Biennale… His solo exhibition Page 22is permanently installed in New York’s 58th Street Branch Library.His solo exhibition Making (Perfect) Worldrepresented Hong Kongtothe 53rd Venice Biennalein 2009.He is the winner of Best Artist Award of CCAA (Chinese Contemporary Art Award) 2012;In 2011, Art Asia Pacificselected Pak as one of Outstanding Artists and Promising Figurein the year.Recently Pak had a solo exhibition Pak Sheung Chuen: That Lightat Mirrored Gardens, Guangzhou, 2016.
