Ade Darmawan, born in 1974, lives and works in Jakarta as an artist, curator, and a founding member of the artists’ collective ruangrupa. He studied graphic art at the Indonesia Art Institute and held his first solo exhibition at Cemeti Contemporary Art Gallery in Yogyakarta in 1997. He later completed a two-year residency at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. Founded in 2000, ruangrupa focuses on visual art in relation to urban social and cultural contexts. Darmawan works across installation, video, digital print, and public art, and has played a key role in the development and leadership of the Jakarta Biennale.
