Cc Foundation & Art Centre was pleased to present Moon Rehearsals, an exhibition by VERTEX af (Ei Arakawa and Sarah Chow) with a performance in collaboration with Forrest Nash. Moon Rehearsals was VERTEX af’s first solo exhibition in China. VERTEX af inquires how magic meets the conceptual in contemporary art production. Utilizing astrology and other magical practices, VERTEX af proposes alternative systems of knowledge that can be used to inform our actions and relationships. While mainstream concepts of astrology (like daily horoscopes and pop cultural sun-sign interpretations) can act as an almost oppressive force that dictate the events of our lives, the zodiac can also be employed as a tool for intuitive self-empowerment and the production of non-data—a blurry, lunar, and somewhat confused approach to technological thinking.
A topline is a sung melody which forms the primary vocal hook of a pop song. In contrast to back up vocals and harmonies, the topline is the dominant melody. Many of the melodies in today's global pop hits are composed by professional and often nearly anonymous topline writers. For example, "Boom, badoom, boom / boom, badoom, boom / bass / yeah, that that super bass", made famous by Nicki Minaj was written by topline savant Ester Dean. With his unique creation vision Arcangel draws together different strands of popular culture highlighting connections between various forms of contemporary artistic creation.
This exhibition showed Lu Yang's latest creation-The Great Adventure of the Material World. It is the second work in his Material World Knight series and also the most challenging work in the game form among his creations. Her work The Material World Knight series create an ideology distinct from current society and bring together many characters from previous works to form her own league of legends. In the material world, audiences can go through multiple identity transformations by interacting with the game work through becoming game players.
The Cc Foundation and Cc Art Center’s first exhibition of 2019 was entitled "Universal Gravitation", with its theme being inspired by Isaac Newton's 1687 discovery of the same law of nature. All the displayed artworks came from the private collection of David Chau, founder of the Cc Foundation. This exhibition and a series of associated public projects were presented in a non-narrative form, allowing the viewer to directly participate in the discussion of the contemporary art subject’s "interactive and metaphorical meaning".
