Heidi Lau was born in 1987 in Macau and currently lives and works in New York. Her work has been exhibited at major international institutions, including the 58th Venice Biennale, the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, the Bronx Museum of the Arts, the Museum of Chinese in America, BRIC in Brooklyn, and the Macao Museum of Art. Reassembling fragments of personal and collective memory, Liu transforms symbolic handicrafts and deformed ruins into materializations of the ancient and the intangible, reconstructing nonlinear historical experiences and forging tactile connections to vanished or unattainable notions of home. Taoist mythology, folk belief, and the colonial history of Macau serve as key conceptual resources in her exploration of homelessness, displacement, and nostalgia as conditions of contemporary life. Her practice has been supported by institutions including Socrates Sculpture Park and the Joan Mitchell Foundation.
