Kohei Yamada, born in 1997 in Osaka and currently based in Tokyo, is a contemporary painter working primarily with oil painting. He graduated from Musashino Art University with a major in oil painting in 2020 and completed his master’s degree at Kyoto University of the Arts in 2022. Yamada’s painting process begins by saturating the canvas with oil, establishing black lines as structural anchors, and placing a yellow spot in the upper left corner to signify light. He then covers the surface with dynamic sweeps of vibrant color. Through successive layers of brushwork, his paintings develop smooth textures, intensified chromatic relationships, and a multilayered depth. Yamada has presented solo and group exhibitions in Tokyo, Seoul, Shanghai, Zurich, and Dijon, and was a finalist for the Contemporary Art Foundation Award in 2020.
