Matthew Brannon, born in 1971 in Anchorage, Alaska, has long been recognized for his wit, literary sensibility, and rigorous precision in approaching his chosen mediums. He is best known for his radical engagement with printmaking, which frequently departs from traditional reproducibility in favor of the elaborate production of unique works. Over the past decade, the scale and ambition of Brannon’s practice have expanded significantly, beginning with a series of large-scale unique prints developed through extensive research into the political and cultural ramifications of the Vietnam War. Since then, his work has addressed an increasingly broad range of generational patterns as they manifest in music, cinema, product design, and typography, as well as in more elusive phenomena such as collective states of mind.
