Sir Antony Mark David Gormley, born on 30 August 1950, is a British sculptor widely recognized for his exploration of the human body in relation to space, architecture, and collective experience. Using the body as a primary measure, Gormley’s work investigates presence, perception, and the relationship between individuals and their environments, often through large-scale public sculpture and site-specific installations. His most iconic works include Angel of the North, commissioned in 1994 and installed in Gateshead in 1998; Another Place on Crosby Beach near Liverpool; and Event Horizon, a multi-part urban installation first presented in London in 2007 and later realized in New York, São Paulo, and Hong Kong. Gormley’s practice has played a pivotal role in redefining contemporary public sculpture, emphasizing embodied experience and spatial awareness.
