Lotus Laurie Kang, born in 1985, is a Canadian photographer, sculptor, and installation artist. She is best known for immersive installations that incorporate large sheets of unfixed or unprocessed photographic paper or film, often combined with sculptural elements and greenhouse structures. These works explore processes of image formation, temporality, and the interaction between material, environment, and perception. Kang was born in Toronto to Korean parents, and aspects of familial migration and displacement subtly inform her practice. She received her BFA from Concordia University in Montreal and earned an MFA from Bard College in New York’s Hudson Valley in 2015. In 2024, Kang participated in the Whitney Biennial and has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship. Her work continues to expand the possibilities of photography beyond the image, emphasizing spatial, environmental, and experiential dimensions.
