The paintings of Balinese artist Oototol ( ?–2008 ) are highly compelling, created using Chinese ink, bamboo sticks, and brushes to explore themes of nature, militarism, and everyday life. A self-taught artist, Oototol produced most of his known works during a remarkably prolific period late in his life, after he became acquainted with artists I Gusti Ayu Kadek Murniasih (1966–2006), I Dewa Putu Mokoh (1934–2012), and Edmondo Zanolini (b. 1951)—better known as Murni, Mokoh, and Mondo. Oototol’s work has only recently begun to receive scholarly attention.
